With a rich history spanning more than two centuries, the Blancpain House is steeped in a deep respect for Swiss watchmaking traditions. Its history began in 1735, when Jehan-Jacques Blancpain established his watchmaking workshop in Villeret, in the heart of the Vallée de Joux, the historic cradle of Swiss watchmaking. From the very beginning, the quality of the timepieces produced was a resounding success. The company remained in the hands of the family for nearly 200 years. His descendants carried on the founder’s expertise and vision while introducing their own innovations. In 1815, Jehan-Jacques Blancpain’s grandson, Frédéric-Louis Blancpain, breathed new life into the brand. Under his leadership, the family’s artisanal workshop evolved into a mass-production facility. Among the changes he introduced, Frédéric-Louis replaced the meeting-wheel mechanism with a cylinder escapement and developed ultra-thin movements. Blancpain then became the leading watchmaking company in Villeret thanks to the quality and precision of its watches.

Following the death of Frédéric-Louis Blancpain, his assistant Betty Fiechter took the reins in 1932. She became the first female CEO of a company of such magnitude, which she led alongside her colleague André Léal. Despite the difficulties caused by the economic crisis, Blancpain continued to sell its watches and gained prominent clients, including Gruen Watch, which ordered movements for ladies’ watches from the company. In 1950, Betty Fiechter’s nephew, Jean-Jacques Fiechter, joined the company. Together, they breathed new life into the brand by revamping the catalog of watch movements. Among their innovative creations was the world’s smallest round movement, with a diameter of 11.85 mm. Blancpain also set out to conquer the depths of the ocean with the launch of the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms collection, a line of high-performance dive watches.
In the 1970s, Blancpain faced a major crisis following the introduction of Japanese quartz watches onto the market. The company was then incorporated into the SSIH (Swiss Watch Industry Society) and continued to produce mechanical watches, but its sales declined significantly. It was not until the arrival of Jean-Claude Biver and Jacques Piguet in 1981 that the brand regained its prestige. To compete with quartz watches, these two visionary entrepreneurs relied on Swiss artisanal expertise and the brand’s unique heritage. Blancpain then established itself as a luxury brand, cultivating the spirit of Swiss watchmaking tradition while innovating in design and complications. In 1996, Blancpain was acquired by the Swatch Group, the world’s largest watchmaking group. This acquisition enabled the brand to consolidate its position in the luxury market and gain access to an even broader international distribution network.
